Demila has an innate ability to network and build valuable liaisons in Government, industry and community across borders and cultures. Her extensive language skills, cross-cultural experience and determined nature, combined with the support of her many Government, Diplomatic and global industry contacts, ensure that Demila achieves whatever she sets out to achieve.
Having been displaced by the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, Demila migrated to Australia and built a successful national property development company, employing many Australians and fellow Bosnian refugees. Her success is demonstrated by her several philanthropic endeavours, her service to the Bosnian Community both in Australia and Bosnia, and her patronage of various Australian and Bosnian Charitable Foundations. In 2013, Demila made a personal gift to the Australian Government in the form of a statue which resides in the gardens of Parliament House Canberra, marking 20 years of formal diplomatic relations between Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a strong commitment to aiding and assisting the under-privileged, Demila is passionate about addressing the issues of domestic family violence, protecting women and children’s rights, reducing poverty, and improving access to healthcare by all.
During her appointed term as Honorary Consul to Bosnia and Herzegovina in NSW Australia, Demila made history by hosting and funding the first ever Bosnian Iftar event held in Parliament House NSW. The Premier of NSW attended the event together with key Government Ministers, Diplomats, influential industry leaders and local Bosnian community members, and paid tribute to Demila’s significant and enduring global community service and generosity.
Demila is active in UN Women, USAID and Harmony Alliance and is regularly called upon to deliver keynote addresses. During COVID-19, Demila was personally engaged in delivering critical government health, welfare and compliance messaging and support across non-English-speaking multicultural communities in Australia in order to minimise fear and maximise understanding in relation to COVID-19 vaccination benefits and isolation requirements.
Currently an advisor and member of the NSW Police Multicultural Advisory Council and a final-year student undertaking a double-degree in Government and International Relations/Criminology and Justice at the Griffith University Australia, Demila has achieved a cumulative Grade Point Average of 6.4. For three consecutive years (2020, 2021 and 2022), she has been awarded the Griffith University Award for Academic Excellence, in addition to receiving the 2021 Co-Curricular Community Service Award, the 2021 Russell Trood Prize in International Relations, and the 2022 Co-Curricular Leadership Award. In her spare time, Demila enjoys cooking, gym, travel and spending time with family and friends.
